What’s a Heat Pump?

What’s a Heat Pump?  A heat pump is an all-in-one cooling and heating system. Heat pumps are devices that use a small amount of energy to move heat from one location to another.  If you know how an air conditioner works, you already know a lot about how a heat pump works, because heat pumps and air conditioners operate in very similar ways.  Heat pumps are a unique kind of heating system, because they can do the work of both a furnace and an air conditioner which is convenient, because there’s no need to install separate systems to heat and cool your home. Heat pumps can also work extremely efficiently because they simply transfer heat, rather than burn fuel to create it.

Heat pumps are ideal for milder climates. This is because moving heat from a very cold area to a hotter one takes more energy than moving heat between two areas with a more moderate temperature difference. There’s also more heat available outside in a moderate climate than in a cold climate.  During summer months, it works like an air conditioner, moving heat from inside your home to the outdoors. When the weather’s cooler, it does the opposite, taking heat from outside and moving it inside.

What to Look for in a Heat Pump? Manufacturers rate the efficiency of most heat pumps in two ways: SEER and HSFP ratings. Higher SEER and HSFP ratings indicate a more efficient unit.  Brennan Heating offers heat pumps, fan coils and controls (thermostats) from several of the world’s leading manufacturers.

Great article! Theres quite a few good manufacturers out there to choose from, and theres many places you can go to to get the various heat pump ratings before you consider purchasing a heat pump. Heat pump efficiency can also be a desiding factor as you can experience great costs savings with a high efficiency heat pump!

This is a great post and very insightful one. A friend told me about these heat pumps, she’s going to get one installed soon. And I might do the same as well.

  3. Thank you very much. The basic schematics for the heat pump is quite simple, yet the actual installation can be very hard to do. The heat pump is very efficient yet I hear that aerial heat pumps can be more efficient as well as the solar powered pump. However, this might depend on your location.
